Improving the Handbrake in Automobilista 2: A Guide to Better Driving
Detection Fix
: If your handbrake isn't being detected, change your control type to "Custom Wheel" before mapping.
- No handbrake hold assist – you can’t set a toggle/hold mode for drifting.
- Physics disconnect – the handbrake in AMS2 doesn’t always transition smoothly from rotation to slide, especially on tarmac.
- Rally cross cars are the only ones where it feels “right.” Drift mods? Forget it—AMS2 isn’t a drifting sim.
In many simulators (especially older titles or those on rFactor 1 tech), pulling the handbrake often feels like pressing a "spin button." The rear end instantly snaps around with a light, arcade-like feeling. automobilista 2 handbrake better
JoyToKey
AMS2 has poor default handbrake linearity. Use or vJoy + Joystick Gremlin to remap the handbrake axis to a “button hold” with a curve, or use DiView to invert and rescale the axis before it reaches the game. Improving the Handbrake in Automobilista 2: A Guide
Pillar C: Weight Transfer & Steering Feedback
The most overlooked feature: Steering Column Scrub . When you engage the handbrake in a real car, the locked rear wheels try to swap ends, creating a lateral force on the front tires. In AMS2, this force is sent directly to the wheel base. As you pull the handbrake, the steering wheel physically lightens for a split second (due to rear grip loss) before loading up as the front tires catch the slide. No handbrake hold assist – you can’t set
- When calibrating the handbrake axis, do not pull it 100% during the “max” step. Pull only ~80-90% of its physical travel. This gives you headroom and makes the game recognize the analog range better.
- Set Deadzone = 0 (unless your handbrake doesn’t fully return to zero).
- Set Saturation = 90-95% (so you don’t need to pull to the physical stop for full effect).
So, why is a better handbrake important in Automobilista 2? A well-executed handbrake can make all the difference in certain situations:
| Setting | Recommended Value | Reason | |---------|------------------|--------| | Deadzone | 0% | Use physical slack if needed, not digital deadzone | | Saturation | 95% | Prevents need to pull to absolute 100% force | | Sensitivity | 50 (Linear) | AMS2’s nonlinear scaling degrades fine control |
