In the world of international construction and engineering, FIDIC (Fédération Internationale des Ingénieurs-Conseils) contracts are the global lingua franca. They provide the standard legal framework for millions of projects worldwide. However, the 2017 update to the "Rainbow Suite" (the Red, Yellow, and Silver Books) introduced significant complexity and new administrative burdens that caught many practitioners off guard.
Perhaps the most contentious change in the 2017 contracts was the introduction of a strict 28-day time bar for claims and the mandatory "Joint Standing Committee" style dispute resolution. The Guide breaks down the complex flowcharts required to manage claims successfully, explaining:
- Do not read it cover-to-cover. It is a reference manual. Use the detailed index (which is clickable in the official PDF) to jump to relevant clauses.
- Use the "Checklists" section before issuing any formal notice – e.g., a checklist for Clause 15 (Termination by Employer) will save you from procedural nullity.
- Cross-reference with your Particular Conditions. Open two PDFs side-by-side: the Guide (explaining the General Conditions) and your project’s Particular Conditions (which may override them).
- Attend the FIDIC Accredited Training – The PDF is a pre-read for the FIDIC Certified Contract Manager (FCCM) program. Using the Guide alone without training increases misinterpretation risk by 40% according to a 2023 survey.

Thanks!! It was really helpful. Now I get the basics of PLC
Very Good , Fahad Bhai , Nicely explained. Many Thanks, Sharad (India)
I really enjoyed the simplicity of your explanation. Am completely to this and I wish to learn from you and want you to be my mentor.
Hi Fahad, thank you for the clear walkthrough.
Quick question though. In your video it shows the timer counting up in red in the timer block and I like that visual feedback while running the program. Was there something that you did to make that show? On mine everything works perfectly, but there is no visual timer that counts up. Also, on mine there is an automatic Program Unit Comment that was added under the “EN” on the timer and the “T50” b input that just says “timer”. Is this a matter of the program version? I downloaded the V3.31 version updated 9/20/2023 from the Fatek website.
Thanks again,
