Subcultures & Slang (A Small Sample)
- Transgender (or Trans): An umbrella term for people whose gender identity differs from the sex they were assigned at birth. For example, a person assigned male at birth who identifies as a woman is a transgender woman. A person assigned female at birth who identifies as a man is a transgender man. Some people identify as non-binary, meaning their gender identity isn't exclusively male or female.
- Cisgender: A person whose gender identity aligns with the sex they were assigned at birth. (This isn't a slur; it's simply a descriptive term, like "straight" is for sexuality.)
- LGBTQ+: Stands for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer/Questioning, and others (Intersex, Asexual, etc.). The "T" is not separate; trans people have always been integral to the fight for LGBTQ+ rights.
Sexual Orientation vs. Gender Identity
The transgender community is currently leading the most significant cultural conversation of the 21st century: the decoupling of biology from destiny. As Gen Z and Gen Alpha embrace gender fluidity at record rates, the "transgender experience" is becoming less of a niche subculture and more of a blueprint for how everyone—queer or straight—can live more authentically.
