The film’s brilliance lies in its structure. Mann does not paint one as the hero and the other as the villain. Instead, he frames them as mirrors of the same man. They are both "addicts" addicted to their respective trades. They cannot function in the normal world; McCauley is emotionally stunted, and Hanna is manic and sleep-deprived.
