Step 4: Insert Backer Rod (For gaps deeper than ½ inch)

  • Utility knife & putty knife
  • Caulk remover tool or stiff wire brush
  • Painter's tape
  • Caulking gun
  • Outdoor-grade sealant (100% silicone or silicone-latex hybrid) – Do not use standard acrylic caulk.
  • Backer rod (foam rope) – if the gap is wider than ¼ inch
  • Mineral spirits or denatured alcohol (for cleaning)
  • Lint-free cloths
  • Gloves

Remember: A “fixed” window is only permanently fixed if you treated the root cause, not just the symptom. Scrape, clean, backer rod, tool, and cure. Do that, and your picture window will give you a perfect picture of the outdoors—without letting the outdoors inside. Utility knife & putty knife Caulk remover tool
