The digitization of Malayalam script has historically been challenged by fragmented encoding standards, complex glyph combinations (chillus, chillaksharam, and conjuncts), and inefficient font distribution methods. The legacy “FML” (Font Malayalam) series, while popular in early desktop publishing, suffers from outdated formats, missing Unicode compliance, and poor ZIP packaging structures. This paper proposes a novel standard— FML+ —a re-engineered font pack distributed as an optimized ZIP archive. We introduce four key improvements: (1) Unicode 15.0 compliance with full chillu support, (2) variable font technology for reduced file bloat, (3) a logical directory schema for cross-platform installation, and (4) metadata-driven rendering hints for web and mobile. Benchmark tests show a 40% reduction in rendering errors, 60% faster archive extraction, and 30% smaller download size compared to legacy FML ZIP packs. We conclude with a reference implementation and a call for community adoption.
