Before discussing the film, it’s essential to understand the man behind the legend. Dashrath Manjhi was a poor landless laborer from Gehlaur village near Gaya, Bihar. In 1959, his beloved wife, Phaguni Devi, tragically died while crossing a rocky mountain range to bring him water—she couldn’t reach a hospital in time because the 70 km road around the hill was too long. Driven by grief and a single-minded mission to save others from a similar fate, Manjhi spent carving a 360-foot-long, 30-foot-wide, and 25-foot-high path through a rocky hill using only a hammer and chisel. His feat reduced the distance between his village and the nearest town from 70 km to just 15 km.
