#VisualFoxPro #VFP #RetroComputing #LegacyCode #MicrosoftHistory #DevLife
- Saves hours of trial-and-error on modern PCs
- Prevents “16-bit subsystem” errors
- Automates obscure post-install tweaks
- Offers VM fallback (VFP 6.0 runs perfectly there)
- Navigate to your extracted folder and locate
SETUP.EXE.
- Do not double-click yet. Instead, right-click > Properties > Compatibility tab.
- Set compatibility mode to Windows XP (Service Pack 3).
- Check "Run this program as an administrator".
- Click OK, then double-click
SETUP.EXE.
Released in 1998, VFP6 is the grumpy old man of the Microsoft ecosystem. It predates Windows XP, let alone Windows 10 or 11. Yet, installing it is a rite of passage for developers who bridge the gap between the past and the future.
- The installer will finish copying files (approx. 350 MB).
- Do not reboot immediately. Instead, close the setup wizard and first apply Service Pack 5 (the last official SP for VFP 6.0).
- Compatibility mode: Windows XP (Service Pack 3)
- Reduce color mode: 16-bit (65536) if UI glitches occur.
- Disable fullscreen optimizations (Windows 10/11).
